Week 1

The object of education is to teach us to love what is beautiful.
— Plato

We had a really thoughtful conversation in Reasoning about Proverbs 25:2, which says, “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.” We asked why God would be concealing things, and pondered why parents hide things from their children - usually a special surprise - birthday presents, Easter baskets, Christmas gifts.

We wondered if God might conceal things for the joy of watching us discover them, just as a parent enjoys their children’s delight in these “hidden gifts”. This is really a beautiful thought - the joy God takes in our discoveries.

  • We shortened math this week to accommodate additional time for Latin.

  • Congrats to Claudia for finishing the multiplication Wheel in under 3 minutes! (1 math fact per 1.25 seconds) Finishers earn the class an ice cream treat for the following week! Woot woot!

  • Next week in class: Please bring in a problem from your math work this week that challenged you; we will discuss these in class together.

  • Great job getting your Latin in this week!

  • We had a quiz on Lesson 1 - if you would like to see how your student is doing, check their quiz in their binder. They were limited to 10 minutes, so it is likely that the quiz is not complete, but errors should give you an idea of how much Latin is clicking for them this week.

  • *Reminder: Each week’s quiz is in their binder - these are not intended to be a surprise, so they are free to look ahead at what they will be completing on the weekly quiz. Assessment is intended to help guide the week’s efforts and help them understand where they need attention.

  • Let me know if you have questions/struggles!

  • 20 m. vocab (chart and/or flashcards), 20 m. exercises, 20 m. grammar (copying the grammar rules into their binders) = 60 minutes per day of Latin work

  • *Charts, vocab and exercises are priority over copying grammar rules.

  • Memorize drawing Canada - they should be drawing, no longer tracing Canada this week. Label Canadian provinces + capitals, and add geographic features listed in the Guide p. 172.

  • Use the Cartography book’s index to help locate features if they need clarification. We labeled most of them in class.

  • Date your practice maps in pen.

  • Blank page assessment next week.

  • Bring in your best map + drawing, memorization, fact to share in class!

  • Research Topic: Geology

  • We watched a segment from Beyond Genesis is History: Rocks & Fossils, and then observed the properties of a hot baked potato, and its reaction to being covered (kept warm), versus being sliced and squeezed open as the earth might be with an eruption or earthquake (steam escapes, cools more quickly) as a visual of how granite formation processes are impacted by their conditions.

  • Choose a topic, find two (or more) sources, create a KWO for each, fuse them and write your essay (as many paragraphs as you choose), illustrate and prepare to present to class.

  • Remember to use your IEW writing skills! Include an intro and conclusion.

  • **Sources can be kept simple and limited to what you have in your home.

  • Include a bibliography, using APA formatting (see handout for formatting instructions).

  • We are working through Proverbs 25, adding a verse each week. Try to memorize each week’s verse!

  • Proverbs 25:2 (mentioned above) “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter;
to search out a matter is the glory of kings.”

  • LTW: Arrangement Assignment using Outline Template

  • They will be choosing a side from the issue and ANI chart that they completed last week, selecting supporting proofs and using the outline template to complete their assignment.

  • Use a separate sheet of paper for completing LTW assignments (do not write in the book; copying to paper supports their learning process with our tools).

  • Continue your reading of Carry on Mr. Bowditch - try using the How to Mark Your Book techniques! See the Exposition appendix in the guide.
