Week 12
““I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave-owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood.””
Just a few weeks to the end of our semester! We had a really great day together - it started with a rich conversation about joy - what it means, where it comes from, and how to avoid the happiness traps set by the world - and ended with a moving annotation of the Gettysburg Address and I Have a Dream by MLK. Lincoln and King were powerful communicators that changed the world - very much what we hope we are cultivating as we study winsome, persuasive writing. The ability to influence the world without attacking, but with courage, humility and honor. The class made such insightful observations and dialectic connections of the two speeches - I have great hopes for how their gifts, abilities and education will be used for tremendous good within the purposes God has for each of them!
I will be sending out my draft of the Blue Book exam sometime next week - you will have an opportunity to read through my questions and determine if you would like any amendments for your student’s assessment. Week 15 (Foundations Week 12) will be a full day of strand by strand assessment where they complete the Blue Book sections - it is really a celebration, of how much they have learned so far this year! We discussed in class what would likely be in the Blue Book, so there should not be any surprises and they have plenty of time to continue working and reviewing. We will be spending Week 14 primarily reviewing for Week 15.
Upcoming Events
Week 13 was determined to be “Pajama Day” - they are welcome to attend in PJs and bring a breakfast buffet snack/treat!
Week 14 - (Mostly) Review Day
Week 15 - Blue Book/Christmas Celebration - We will have games and treats to break up the Blue Book day and celebrate the Christmas break! The girls requested a cookie exchange; right now I think that just means “bring 1-2 dozen Christmas cookies on Week 15”. We will exchange them accordingly in the day’s celebrations! *Totally optional for JP - I’m sure there will be plenty to share! : )
Week 12 Playlist
Principal Parts of a Latin Verb (please watch!)
Dad Follows Sandwich Instructions Literally (we laughed through this in class!)
Gettysburg (Lincoln) and I Have a Dream (MLK, 100 years after Gettysburg)
Character Journal - Joy (Romans 15:13) “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Joy = It’s good to be me here with you. [There is a beautiful joy in our community day together!]
Joy can be experienced in good times or bad, because it’s a function of your character (and not your circumstances).
I highly recommend this series on Bringing up Joyful Children (starting with Part 1) by Bill St. Cyr on the Flourish Podcast (Ambleside International).
Students will be taking turns leading a math problem in class each week.
We are practicing using the 5 Common Topics for math problems in class.
Math leaders for upcoming discussions (see worksheet, choose a problem to present):

Polish up your Lab Journal with any additional research and note taking that you need (thank you for the inspiration Elizabeth!).
Procedure - write your experiment procedure in explicit detail, and have it reviewed by a parent; write it into your Lab Journal and Research Plan.
See Science Buddies for additional research and procedure resources.
The Guide Research Appendix also contains further direction, examples, etc.
Call me if you have any questions!
We only have a few verses of Proverbs 25 left! Keep up listening and reviewing for our end of semester treat!
Next week we will have a term matching activity - review the glossary to refresh your memory on the tools we have learned!
LTW: Exposition - Number the Stars
Today we listened to the Gettysburg Address and MLK’s “I Have a Dream” speech to identify their strong verbs and use of parallelism - it was powerful!
**USE THE ESSAY FOUR CHECKLIST IN YOUR LTW WORKBOOK APPENDIX (p. 111) TO HELP YOU WRITE YOUR PAPER THIS WEEK.
